
Precision Capabilities
CPT manufactures custom components to demanding dimensional, geometric, and surface requirements. Our capabilities range from close-tolerance glass machining to ultra-precision optical finishing, with each process selected around the material, geometry, size, and performance requirements of the part.

The specifications below represent achievable capabilities on appropriate materials and geometries. Final tolerances are evaluated against the requirements of each project.
Dimensional Accuracy:
±0.0001"​

CPT manufactures tight-tolerance glass, optical, and hard-material components with precise control of critical dimensions and features. Lengths, widths, diameters, bores, slots, profiles, and custom geometries can be produced to demanding requirements when the material and component design permit.
​
For parts with multiple critical features, dimensional accuracy is considered across the complete geometry rather than as a single isolated measurement.

Thickness Control:
±0.000020" / ±0.5 µm
​
Precision grinding, lapping, and polishing allow extremely close control of finished thickness. On suitable components, thickness can be held to the sub-micron level for applications where even small variations may affect assembly, alignment, spacing, or optical performance.
​
Thickness requirements are evaluated alongside part size, parallelism, material, and final surface condition to establish the correct manufacturing process.

Optical Flatness:
Up to λ/40
​
CPT produces precision flat surfaces ranging from tight-tolerance technical components to ultra-high-accuracy optical surfaces. Flatness requirements can be matched to the function of windows, mirrors, substrates, spacers, optical flats, reference surfaces, and other custom components.
​
The achievable result depends on the material, clear aperture, thickness, geometry, support conditions, and finished-part requirements.

Parallelism:
As Low as 1 Arc Second​
Closely controlled parallel surfaces are essential when opposing faces must maintain an extremely precise relationship. CPT supports demanding parallelism requirements for windows, substrates, spacers, optical flats, and other precision components.
​
Depending on the part, parallelism may be controlled through a combination of grinding, lapping, polishing, thickness measurement, and angular verification.

Surface Quality:

Optical surface requirements can range from functional technical finishes to exceptionally high-quality polished surfaces. CPT produces components for applications where scratches, digs, pits, and other surface imperfections must be carefully controlled.
Surface quality is matched to the actual needs of laser, imaging, sensing, medical, research, and other demanding optical systems rather than applying the same finish requirement to every component.

Surface Roughness:
Low-Angstrom Finishes
​
For applications where scatter, reflection, adhesion, or microscopic surface condition are critical, polishing can extend well beyond visual surface quality.
​
On suitable materials and geometries, CPT can produce highly refined surfaces reaching the low-angstrom range. Surface roughness is evaluated separately from scratch-dig and surface figure, since each describes a different characteristic of the finished optic.

Surface Figure:
Up to λ/20
​
Surface figure describes how closely a manufactured optical surface matches its intended geometry. CPT supports tightly controlled figure requirements across flat, spherical, cylindrical, and other precision surfaces.
​
The manufacturing and measurement approach is selected according to the intended form, clear aperture, material, and optical function of the component.
​
Angular Accuracy & Wedge:
Arc-Minute to Arc-Second Control
​
Prisms, wedges, windows, and other multi-surface components depend on precise angular relationships between their faces. CPT manufactures components requiring controlled angles for beam steering, alignment, image manipulation, spacing, and other optical functions.
​
Angular accuracy can extend from demanding arc-minute tolerances into the arc-second range on appropriate geometries. For precision windows, plates, and substrates, wedge can be controlled to approximately ±5 arc seconds when the application requires an extremely close relationship between opposing surfaces.

Curved & Cylindrical Surfaces:
Precision Radius & Profile Control

CPT manufactures convex, concave, spherical, cylindrical, and other curved geometries for optical and technical applications. Radius, form, profile, thickness, and surface requirements are considered together because performance depends on the complete manufactured geometry.
​
Capabilities range from conventional curved surfaces to difficult custom profiles and small-radius components requiring specialized tooling or process development.

Centering:
To 30 Arc Seconds
​
For lenses and other curved optical components, the relationship between the optical surfaces and the mechanical geometry of the part can be critical.
​
CPT supports tightly controlled centering requirements on applicable components, helping maintain alignment between the optical and mechanical axes. Achievable centering depends on component geometry, edge configuration, diameter, and the surfaces available for measurement and reference.

Custom Requirements:
Not every difficult part fits a specification table.
Some components combine unusual materials, extreme aspect ratios, fragile sections, difficult radii, multiple critical surfaces, or geometries that require a manufacturing process developed specifically for the part.
​
CPT evaluates custom requirements individually and can develop the tooling, fixturing, process sequence, and measurement approach around the component itself. When a requirement falls outside the capabilities listed above, send us the drawing. The limits of a standard process are not necessarily the limits of what can be manufactured.
